An exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve is a device that controls the emission of nitrogen oxide (NOx) from engines. By recirculating the exhaust gas and returning it to the intake side, the EGR valve improves the fuel efficiency and reduces the emission of harmful gas.
The EGR valve is arranged between the exhaust manifold and intake manifold.

Symptoms in case of failure

  • Impossible to drive smoothly (vibrations, stumbling, or engine stall)
  • Reduced power
  • Malfunction indicator light (MIL) turned on

Typical causes of failures

The following factors result in the failure of the EGR valve.

  • Clogging/fouling of the air filter
  • Air leakage in the intake system
  • Failure of the turbocharger
  • Clogging of the catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter (DPF)
  • Connection with a different vacuum hose
