What is a Fuel Injector?

A fuel injector is a device that, based on the signal from the engine control unit (ECU), injects a specific amount of fuel required by the engine at the appropriate time. The fuel injector is charged with fuel pressurized by the fuel pump. The signal from the ECU actuates the fuel injector solenoid, and the valve opens, allowing fuel to be injected. With multi-point injection (MPI), fuel is injected near the intake port and then drawn into the combustion chamber with air. With direct injection (DI), fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber.
In addition, owing to the optimum fuel control implemented by the ECU corresponding to the driving conditions, such as the atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, and load, the fuel injector contributes to not only an enhanced engine output but also an improved fuel economy and a reduction of the harmful substances contained in the exhaust gas.
